Here, we are going to discuss the most common types of locks available.
Padlocks
Padlocks are a great lock because they are able to be moved. Yes, they are locks that can be removed when you unlock them. Unlike other locks, they are not permanently attached, or at least difficult to remove. Quite the contrary, a padlock is simple to move around. Depending on the kind of door that you are using them on, whether it might be a locker door or even on a bike, you will find that their sizes will vary. There are two different types of padlock locks. The first kind is a combination lock, which surely you have seen in a school setting, or when you lock up your bike and so on. Combination locks have dials that unlock the hook when the combination is plugged in. Are there any cons to padlocks? Well, one thing that some people don’t like is how easily they are unlocked. The other type of lock is a keyed padlock. Keyed padlocks are opened by a key. Keyed padlocks can be either rekeyable or non-rekeyable. What is the difference between the two? Rekeyable padlocks can have the key swapped out. This allows one to switch the key to one that is used for many different purposes. Key- and non-key-retaining padlocks offer benefits, for instance, a key-retaining padlock can’t be taken from the padlock if the lock is open.
Deadbolt locks
Another kind of lock is a deadbolt lock. This is obviously heavier than an easy-to-move padlock. Single cylinder deadbolts are one kind of deadbolt available. This is the type of lock that has a knob that is relatively small inside on the lock’s interior. To unlock it from the inside, the knob needs to be turned. This can be a downfall to this type of deadbolt lock though, too. Double cylinder deadbolts have key cylinders on the inside in addition to the outside of the lock. This provides a better level of security, but if you are inside you will need a key to unlock the door. A con to this is that if you are in an emergency, it can set you back a little bit in terms of evacuating. You might want to leave the key in the lock, at least, if you are at the property at the time. There is actually a hybrid of both deadbolts. This is a lockable thumb turn deadbolt. A lockable thumb turn deadbolt is similar to a single cylinder deadbolt in the sense that it can be locked with a key from the inside. So if it is locked, the thumb turn can’t be utilized to lock or unlock the door. Out of the different deadbolts discussed, this one provides the highest level of security.
Knob locks
Knob locks are typically found on interior and exterior doors at residential properties. They tend to be used for security but on exterior doors, they should not necessarily be the only option you have in terms of locking up.
The lock cylinder, rather than being on the door, is inside the knob. Unfortunately, in this scenario, it can easily be broken off so then the lock cylinder is no longer serving its purpose. If you do have knob locks, consider deadbolt locks as well to go with them. It never hurts to make sure you have adequate security, especially at your home or any property that you are working hard for.
Lever handle locks
Lever handle locks are another kind of lock. They are interior locks. You will commonly see them used for commercial properties. This is the type of handle that you open by pressing down. So, it’s different from a knob lock that you would turn to open. You’ll see lever handle locks in buildings that are accessible to persons who are handicapped. These locks are unlocked by use of a key.
These are some of the most popular kinds of locks but of course there are a wide variety of other locks on the market for you to choose from. You might want to talk with a locksmith to narrow down your options if you are looking into the various kinds of locks. There are so many kinds of locks that are available for all kinds of security needs, as you can see. No matter what type of property you are managing or that you might own, whether commercial or residential, you need to have locks. A locksmith can ensure yours are fully functional by providing lock repair and lock replacement when necessary. Even rekeying locks is an option.
